Corpus Christi Invests Millions in Roads, Traffic, Water Infrastructure

The City of Corpus Christi approved $54.7 million in new infrastructure projects this month, including a $12.6 million contract to rebuild Starlite Lane and a traffic management system covering 77 intersections.

These moves come as the city advances dozens of voter-approved road projects while preparing for a major desalination plant that will expand drinking water capacity. Residents face immediate effects on travel times and long-term questions about reliability of water service and port-area access.

Road Work Reaches Neighborhoods and Intersections

Sixty-nine road projects valued at roughly $700 million sit in construction or planning stages under bond programs. The new traffic technology will link signals at 77 locations to reduce stops during peak hours. Starlite Lane reconstruction adds another segment to the list of streets scheduled for full rebuilds.

TxDOT continues oversight of the Harbor Bridge replacement, which will become the longest cable-stayed bridge in the United States. Drivers who cross the current span daily will see phased work continue through the coming years, with the finished structure intended to improve clearance for ship traffic and ease congestion on approach roads.

Water Projects Move From Demonstration to Full Scale

A variable salinity desalination demonstration project remains active as a special city initiative. The larger $979 million plant is scheduled to begin operations in December 2029 and deliver 50 million gallons of water each day. The FY 2025 Capital Budget of $1,008.7 million allocates funds for water and wastewater treatment upgrades alongside street and drainage work citywide.
