Corpus Christi Reviews Long-Term Transportation Blueprint and Local Transit Policies
The Corpus Christi Metropolitan Planning Organization is currently evaluating a draft 25-year transportation plan alongside updates to public transit fares and island mobility strategies.
How we reported this
The Corpus Christi Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) is currently conducting a formal review of its Draft 2050 Metropolitan Transportation Plan. This comprehensive document serves as the primary regional blueprint, updated every five years, intended to guide infrastructure investments and transportation development across the area for the next 25 years. The initiative represents a significant effort to align future construction and service improvements with the evolving needs of the region's population.
As part of the ongoing assessment of local transit services, the MPO’s Transportation Policy Committee (TPC) recently engaged in discussions regarding fare adjustments. The Corpus Christi Regional Transportation Authority (CCRTA) finalized a decision to increase the base transit fare from 75 cents to $1.00, a policy change that became effective on January 5, 2026. This adjustment reflects the authority's approach to managing operational costs within the regional public transit system.
Infrastructure and Mobility Projects
Beyond regional planning and fare structures, specific mobility initiatives are underway to address traffic and safety concerns in coastal areas. Corpus Christi is currently reviewing a proposed Padre and Mustang Island Mobility Plan. This plan includes specific recommendations for Park Road 22, including the introduction of dedicated lanes for both bicycles and golf carts, as well as a proposed reduction in the speed limit from 55 mph to 45 mph. These measures are designed to enhance accessibility and safety for residents and visitors navigating these island corridors.
Financial oversight and capital investments remain a central focus for the city's transport infrastructure. The region recently secured a $46 million federal grant, which is designated for the construction of a state-of-the-art maintenance facility for the CCRTA. This project is expected to bolster the long-term capacity and reliability of the area's public transportation network.
Separately, governance practices at the Port of Corpus Christi have also been adjusted to ensure fiscal accountability. Following an audit that identified weak controls regarding nearly $1 million in credit card expenditures, the Port of Corpus Christi commissioners voted unanimously to amend the organization’s travel policy. The new policy is intended to improve governance and oversight of future agency expenses. These combined efforts across planning, funding, and policy administration reflect the current priorities of Corpus Christi officials in managing regional growth and institutional accountability.
